The Assessor’s Office administers all aspects of real property assessment in the town. The Assessor identifies all property in the town and estimates the value of each parcel.

Staff along with the assessor, does field review of new construction and other improvements to existing structures on a yearly basis. The Assessor’s Office also reviews each real property sale in the town to update ownership and review inventory which aids in both valuation and accurate recording of inventory data.

Our office reviews and maintains all property tax exemptions (except new homeowner STAR) in the town. More information is available at the link below. We also mail renewal applications for those exemptions when applicable. We send courtesy letters to our senior citizens when the deadline is looming for their exemption renewals. Sometimes we are unfortunately also tasked with sending the occasional denial letter. The deadline for exemptions and renewals is March 1st.

The town, county and school budgets determine the amount of tax to be raised. The Assessment determines the share each property owner will pay toward the total tax levy. Tax rates are applied to your taxable value (assessed value minus exemptions). School tax bills are sent by, and paid to, the School Tax Collector in which your parcel(s) resides. Property tax bills are sent by, and paid to, the Town Tax Collector in the Town of Greenfield. You will need to call the appropriate tax collector if you have a question regarding payment of tax bills or If you require a copy of your bill.

We are here to assist you with your questions. Please call us at (518) 893-7432 x302 if we are unable to answer your call, leave a detailed message and someone will get back to you usually, within the hour if we are in the office. It is a good idea to call ahead as sometimes we are out of the office due to education or field work requirements.
