Building a Life Around a Small Business in Greenfield

Greenfield Wine & Liquor’s Kevin Carroll Turns Successful Business into Successful Life

Owning a small business is a tough endeavor that at times can take over your life, but some people are clearly better at it than others. Delmar native Kevin Carroll relocated to Saratoga Springs in 2010. After spending about five years in the insurance industry, he took “life is what you make it” to heart and decided it was time to find something of his own. In 2015, while searching for a small business he could get behind, he found the small wine and spirits shop on Route 9N.

“I always had the wine and spirits industry in the back of my mind as something that would be fun to do,” Carroll said. “I saw this small business in a rural community and knew there was room for growth. I knew I could focus on building an improved shopping experience here.”

Carroll quickly decided Greenfield was the place for him to grow roots. “I love this quiet community in the foothills of the Adirondack mountains,” he said. “We are near all the amenities but out of the crowds.” He purchased and settled just up the street from the store.

He knew the importance of establishing excellent relationships with his distributors and brand ambassadors, who frequently serve samples at the store.  Those relationships kept panning out for Carroll, as they led him to meet his now wife, Bree, who worked for a bourbon company. They were married two years ago and now have a baby boy and a 1-year-old puppy, Norman, a customer favorite who helps with the store’s marketing.

Carroll has been working to make the store a good mix of boutique and name-brand items, giving his shoppers both familiar and new experiences that aren’t typically found in a medium-sized liquor store. In May of 2022, the store moved to a 2,000-square foot location a few doors down the plaza, doubling its space.  The address is 2532 Route 9N in Greenfield.

You can find staff picks, featured wines and even cocktail ideas. Carroll said that during the pandemic, he started featuring a table to inspire customers to have fun becoming their own bartender at home. This past week, he featured a “Bloody Rum Fashioned” in honor of the upcoming spooky season, sharing its recipe and at times sampling.

He has many gift sets, a wine rewards club and offers a ten percent discount to those who purchase a case of wine (mix-match any 12 bottles).

He enjoys featuring local Greenfield spirits like Fossil Stone Vineyard & Winery, with its popular oaked-aged marquette, and Saratoga Courage products, with its award-winning “Pick Six” vodka. Mike Spiak, owner of Fossil Stone Vineyard & Winery, even pitched in to create the rustic, handcrafted wood bar onsite.  The store also proudly carries items from Adirondack Winery in Lake George, Springbrook Hollow Farm in Queensbury, Old Tavern Farm in Stillwater and other local wineries.

Carroll loves spending time with his family and is an avid bass guitar player who plays local gigs in the area. One of the bands he plays with, The Saratoga All Stars, performs at The View at Brookhaven in Porter Corners.

It would seem that Kevin Carroll’s hard work has been paying off. He has found luck in both business and life. Visit the store’s website for more information.
