Greenfield Park Spotlight: So Many Reasons to Visit Bustling Middle Grove Park

About four miles down Middle Grove Road, sits a pretty little park that serves as the home of many Greenfield events. Our Middle Grove Park at 428 Middle Grove Rd. is a 13-acre park that offers residents all that you need for a quintessential park visit. Whether it’s a birthday party, family picnic, playdate or just a new location for a summer dinner venue, Middle Grove Park has got what you need without having to travel.

It has major open space. It’s perfect to fly a kite, throw a ball or let the kids run around. Eight fields are lined and equipped for the town’s soccer program each spring and fall. A paved 1/2 mile trail marks the perimeter of the park, which is perfect for some exercise. Trees line the outer edge and there is plenty of parking. A more than 1,000-square-foot rustic pavilion holds picnic tables and is available for rent by contacting the Town Clerk. A basketball court was refurbished in 2018 and features a prominent “G” for Greenfield, along with two resurfaced tennis courts. (These are available first come, first serve.) Our Rec Department holds tennis instruction in the spring and summer.

In the middle of it all, is a gorgeous new playground that was refurbished in 2020. The playground, built by the innovative Kompan Playgrounds, features spring toys, a spinami (multi-person spinner), a firetruck play structure, swings for all and a “dragite” bouncy rope and climbing net structure.

There are many different events and opportunities to take advantage of this TOG park. Thursdays all summer, from June 21 to Sept. 19, the TOG Farmers Market will keep it bustling. There will be no better time to see this park alive and filled with its TOG community, than from 4-7 p.m. each Thursday. The market this year will feature live local musicians each week; a mobile library van from the Saratoga Springs Public Library with story times, books to borrow and crafts; hot food truck dinner options to dine in or take home; dozens of local vendors with everything from fresh produce to baked goods, specialty food items, artisan crafts; and special events too. A family hoedown will take place on July 25 at 5 p.m. and family yoga will take place on 6/21 and 6/27 at 7 p.m. The Farmers Market was once run by the Town of Greenfield Historical Society at this park on the front green area from 2009 until 2020, when during the pandemic it made sense to move it to the Middle Grove United Methodist Church, who took it over until this year.

Multiple Saturdays throughout the summer, the Town of Greenfield Lions Club holds an early morning opportunity to explore the park with its Cars & Coffee fundraising event. Picture a beautiful summer morning with a car show to peruse, and some time to enjoy coffee and breakfast sandwiches with your neighbors. A fantastic opportunity to bring the kids or grandkids to play at the playground too! This is a free event with no pre-registration required for the cars, and all types are welcome.  The remaining dates for this event are July 6, Aug. 3 and Aug. 31, from 8-11 a.m. This event will be held rain or shine.

Greenfield’s Historical Society will hold a major event on July 13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The “Car Show and Live Music in the Park” event will feature dozens of classic cars and other specialty vehicles along with a festival of musicians throughout the day. The event is free admission. There will be food and drink available for purchase, as well as other vendors with local merchandise for sale. Car show registration is $10. Local performers scheduled to appear include Elizabeth Conant, Bonnie Greco, Out of Reach and New American Cuisine.

Park History and Park Future

The TOG purchased this park back in the 1980s, when it was resident-owned and featured only a baseball field that was hidden in the back corner, invisible from the road. Other than the baseball diamond, most of it was covered in brush and farm pastures. Eventually the town added a soccer field and in the late 90s, restrooms and a pavilion were built.

Last year, the town purchased a foreclosed half-acre parcel near the park’s entrance from Saratoga County with its Open Space Grant. We cleaned up the property demolishing and removing several structures, adding soil, grading and seeding. We are still deciding exactly what we’ll do with this new corner of the park, but are happy to have helped beautify this property. Stay tuned.

Our Buildings & Grounds crew in total spend more than 30 hours a week keeping this park beautiful and ready to play with freshly mowed grass, lined fields, clean restrooms and the like. Thank you to this TOG team!

Our Middle Grove Town Park has sure grown into a recreational fun spot. See you at the park this summer TOG community!
