We are so honored and proud that Greenfield resident Colonel Robert E. Donaldson has recently been appointed Wing Commander of the 109th Airlift Wing, Stratton Air National Guard Base, New York. Donaldson first enlisted in the New York Air National Guard 33 years ago.
Donaldson has lived in Greenfield for the past five years and has two children, Kaiden, age 14, and Elise, age 10.
“I love the open space Greenfield provides and the proximity to Saratoga Springs,” said Colonel Donaldson. “The people here are great and also very supportive of our nation’s military. I’m proud to be a member of this community.”
Donaldson graduated from Union College as a civil engineer and received a law degree from Albany Law School. He has been married to his wife, Loana, for 15 years.
His awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Aerial Achievement Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, Air & Space Organizational Excellence Award, National Defense Service Medal with bronze Service Star, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
The 109th Airlift wing, which consists of 1,160 Airmen, operates ten LC-130 Hercules transport used for global airlift. The massive planes are equipped with skis to land on snow and ice on their missions to Greenland and Antartica.
