CALLING ALL TRAIN & HISTORY LOVING ADULTS, SENIORS AND CHILDREN:

Come aboard the Greenfield Historical Society’s Annual Caboose Day August 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kings Park, 4000 State Route 9N (corner of Porter Corners Rd. and 9N). This event is free admission and an excellent way to spend a Saturday supporting your community and the TOG’s history.

Buy a caboose tee shirt ($20) and get some lunch. There will be hotdogs, cheeseburgers, hamburgers and more. Bring home some baked goods from the bake sale. Shop from local vendors. Tour the facilities. Join the Greenfield Historical Society to help keep Greenfield’s history alive for future generations for just $10 a year or $100 for a lifetime. This event is a popular August event every year (it’s the 14th year!) and it is held rain or shine. This is a cash event!

“The event is a fantastic way to instill a value of history in our children,” said Greenfield Historical Society President Joan Rowland. “Join us for lunch and a festive history lesson. It is an excellent way to support the history and future of this community.”

The Kings Station was a station depot of Adirondack Railroad, dating back to 1865. It was moved from its original location (a few hundred feet up the road) to this park when it was retired from use in 1933. The landmark red caboose, is a more than 100-year-old antique caboose that was most recently refurbished in 2010. The 1919 caboose was purchased by Supervisor Glenn Hammond for the Town of Greenfield from Delaware & Hudson Railroad for $1 in 1988. It was later moved from its location in southern Corinth to the current site.

These Greenfield icons will take you back in time at the Caboose Day event. Historians dressed in classic conductor attire will be on hand to share the history.

According to Greenfield Historian Duane Cornell, these landmarks serve as an important reminder of the importance the railroad played in the history of Greenfield dating back to the 1800s, in transporting summer tourists and servicing the lumber and paper industries throughout the Adirondacks.  “This event, that started in August of 2009, is a wonderful opportunity for the people of Greenfield to visit this special museum as it comes to life,” Cornell said.

PLAN TO TAKE AN ACTUAL TRAIN RIDE as part of the celebration. Train rides will be offered by Saratoga Corinth & Hudson Railway. Sign up for the “Greenfield Caboose Day Trip” to travel to the event by train. Trips take place at  9:30 a.m. or 12:30 p.m. for a 2.5 hour trip (Including layover at the celebration). Costs vary by seat, approximately $13-$25.

Another option is to sign up for the “Greenfield Flyer” for a 45-minute train ride from Kings Station to LaMothe Landing and back.
