We saved our last TOG Park Spotlight for this time of year, because it is Veterans Month. When travelling on 9N, you will pass our small, but mighty Veterans Park at the Grange Rd. intersection. The 1/4-acre parcel was a gift from Ballston Spa National Bank in the early 90s. The bank purchased the property and thought it would be a nice permanent place for Veterans monument. The monument, pictured above, was donated to the town by LaBrake Memorial in the 90s when we used to celebrate “Heritage Days.” It originally was placed near Town Hall, until it was moved to Veterans Park.
This centrally located park features a prominent flag pole, the monument, and a small gazebo. Thanks to our TOG Building & Grounds Maintenance Crew, it is always seasonally decorated for us all to enjoy. It is a perfect little place to enjoy a picnic, an ice cream cone or a cup of coffee with a friend. We hope that as you pass and enjoy this little gem, you also remember our many brave veterans who called the Town of Greenfield home.
Did you know the TOG honors our veterans in some other ways each year? For starters we have a lovely memorial of names in our Town Council room. There are large plaques featuring hundreds of veteran names from the Civil War, World War I and II, the Korean conflict, Vietnam War and the Gulf War/War on Terror.
Our Brookhaven Golf Course holds an annual Veterans Golf Tournament and proceeds are donated to the Saratoga Veterans Agency and the Albany VA Medical Center. Next year’s event will take place August 17. If you can play in this tournament, sponsor the event or make an in-kind donation, contact Anthony Therrien, head golf professional, at 519-893-7458.
Saratoga County Board of Supervisors holds an Honor Deceased Veteran Ceremony, selecting distinguished veterans from all over the county each month. A Greenfield veteran is recognized approximately once a year. This year, Arthur “Bill” Wilsey was recognized. Wilsey served in the U.S. Army. Family members were invited to the ceremony, along with our local, county, state and U.S. government leaders.
For the past two years, the TOG has participated in “Operation Green Light,” a nationwide effort created by the National Association of Counties to support military veterans. We light up Town Hall and our Veterans Park with green light and encourage residents to participate as well.
This spring, the TOG installed American flags through its Greenfield town center on Route 9N.
We are so thankful to all those who have served in our nation’s military. We are always open to new ideas to honor our veterans.
