Vicki’s Pizzeria & Market Finds a Surprising Need in Greenfield: TOG Business Spotlight

TOG Business Spotlight

Vicki’s Pizzeria and Market had no idea it would be the subs and market portion of the business that fueled its success. Since its opening at 361 Porter Corners Road on March 27, Owner Walt Brownell said he’s astonished at the amount of business for the submarine sandwiches and small grocery market. While pizza is selling, he said Vicki’s fresh, lightly toasted sub sandwiches are the item that is becoming a Greenfield hit. He said it seems that our Greenfield residents were quite hungry for a good sandwich shop. What’s more, Vicki’s free delivery service for food and grocery items has taken off too.

“People are loving that they can call for a quick delivery of things like milk, ice, toiletries and other staples,” Brownell said. “Surprisingly our subs and groceries are just flying out the door.”

Walt Brownell is not new in the pizza restaurant business, having operated pizza restaurants for the past 12 years. Driving through Porter Corners, he noticed a “for rent” sign and he immediately was interested in the building with its potential for both pizza and a market. Living in Ballston Spa, he loved how short his commute would be. Brownell said he spent years driving to his first business in Duanesburg and then moved the Galway. The Porter Corners location is just a 10-minute commute.

The market at Vicki’s is expanding quickly, adding local items like Smith Farm pies, Kings Dairy products and Twin Leaf Farms maple syrups and popcorn products. Brownell orders 12-15 homemade pies each week and they sell out quickly. The pies come in rotating flavors including apple, blueberry, cherry, rhubarb and cost $16 a pie. Vicki’s will start selling some beer and canned alcohol beverages in the near future. Bottled milk and bacon are early morning staples that are often delivered each weekend.

A near-famous Reuben submarine sandwich is contributing to the growing popularity of Vicki’s subs. The menu features all the traditional 12-inch subs along with more than five specialty hot subs. Subs cost on average $11. The restaurant also serves some special $8-$12 breakfast sandwiches on a hard roll and homemade home fries. Wraps, steak sandwiches, hamburgers, fish and clam rolls also are sold. There are a lot of appetizers including chicken wings, fresh salads, calzones and pasta too. A small cheese pizza is only $11. In addition, there is a catering menu for events. See the menu below.

Brownell said his favorite menu item is still the 12-cut Sicilian pizza with peppers and sausage. Brownell learned to make the special sauce recipe while spending years working at Leo’s Diner in Ballston Spa while he was a teen.

“Every batch of sauce is just a little different and it is very special,” he said.

The restaurant is named after his wife of 24 years. Occasionally Vicki joins Brownell and the other two employees to work at the shop. Brownell also has owned and operated Brownell Construction and Landscaping for the past 23 years.

He isn’t a stranger to the TOG, as he lived here for ten years in his mid 20s.

“The best part of Greenfield is how friendly its people are,” Brownell said. “They are a totally different breed of people. Everyone is friendly and very helpful, understanding and patient. It’s a great place to own a business.”

Town Supervisor Kevin Veitch is thrilled to welcome another TOG business to the building, which has seen a number of pizza restaurants over the years. “Home delivery is a nice benefit for residents in this area,” he said. “The town and its loyal residents will do everything we can to support this new small business.”

We are always happy to welcome another TOG business to town and know Vicki’s will do great with our loyal TOG business supporters. Order at 518-893-5083.
